A Chaos Orb is a broad reset button for the random modifiers on a rare item. The item's base identity remains, but its current modifier roll is replaced by a new random roll. That makes the orb simple to use, but deliberately unpredictable.
The Path of Exile 2 Chaos Orb is not a complete reroll. It removes one random modifier from a rare item and then adds one new random modifier. Everything else on the item stays in place, so the result depends on both the modifier that disappears and the modifier that replaces it.
All random modifiers on the rare item are rerolled.
One random modifier is removed and one random modifier is added.
The base item and its underlying type remain.
Every other modifier and the underlying item remain.
You want a completely new roll on a rare base worth keeping.
Several modifiers are worth keeping and at least one is expendable.
The entire new modifier set can be worse than the old one.
It can remove the best modifier and add a useless replacement.
