A broad reroll, in plain language.
A Chaos Orb is a broad reset button for the random modifiers on a rare item. The item's base identity remains, but its current modifier roll is replaced by a new random roll. That makes the orb simple to use, but deliberately unpredictable.
When this item makes sense.
It is most understandable as another chance at a usable roll on a rare base you want to keep. It is not a targeted upgrade: you are exchanging the entire current modifier result for a new one rather than choosing a specific stat.
The new modifiers are random and can be worse than the old ones. Do not treat a Chaos Orb as a guaranteed improvement or a guaranteed amount of value. Path of Exile 2 uses a different Chaos Orb effect, so advice for the two games should not be mixed.
Definition first. Price second.
Chaos Orbs also function as a familiar trading denomination in Path of Exile 1. Their buying power is not fixed; it changes with the league, player activity, supply, and the currency being compared. PoExplorer therefore keeps the item definition separate from time-stamped market data.
