Cartographer's Chisel
Learn what a Cartographer's Chisel changes, when map quality is worth buying, and why quality never guarantees a profitable map.
What happens if you use it?
The map gains ordinary quality, improving item quantity.
The map base and existing modifiers remain unless another crafting step changes them.
You intend to run the map and the added quantity is worth the chisels.
A valuable alternate quality type can be replaced, and better quantity still guarantees nothing.

Improve a map before you run it.
A Cartographer's Chisel improves map quality. In Path of Exile 1, that quality enhances item quantity, the imported directions cap ordinary quality at 20%, and applying it replaces other map quality types.
Spend on the map, not on the hope.
Use chisels before committing more expensive map crafting when the extra quantity supports the plan. Normal maps gain quality more efficiently per chisel than higher-rarity maps, so the order of operations can change the total cost.
Quality improves the map's reward environment; it does not guarantee a specific return. Applying ordinary quality also replaces another map quality type.
Map preparation creates recurring demand.
Chisel demand follows mapping activity, league supply, and how often players prepare maps in bulk. A live exchange ratio prices the currency now; it cannot calculate the return from the particular map you choose.
