Portal Scroll
Understand the Portal Scroll in Path of Exile 1, from creating a town portal to preserving safe return access during an area.
What happens if you use it?
A portal connecting the area to town is created.
The area, character, and encounter are otherwise unchanged.
A reliable return route is worth one scroll.
The instance can expire or the portal can be unusable when urgently needed.

Create a portal back to town.
Using a Portal Scroll creates a portal to town. It provides a return route from the current area; it does not complete the encounter, protect the character, or preserve an instance forever.
What does a Portal Scroll do?
It opens a portal from the current area to town. Use the return portal while it remains available rather than treating it as permanent access.
Does it identify an item?
No. Portal Scroll and Scroll of Wisdom solve different problems: one opens a town portal, while the other identifies an item.
When is it most useful?
Use one before a risky encounter, when inventory space is tight, or when you need town services and intend to return to the same area.
Use portals as logistics, not invulnerability.
Open a portal when returning to town is useful for inventory, recovery, or preparation, and consider placing one before a dangerous encounter. Instance rules and available portals still govern whether returning is possible.
A portal can be lost when an instance expires, and leaving an encounter may reset or alter its state. Creating the portal does not guarantee a safe opportunity to enter it.
Convenience keeps a basic currency liquid.
Portal Scrolls are common, but continual use creates practical demand. Their value is primarily convenience and continuity rather than a crafting gamble or direct power increase.
