Item Rarity and Upgrade Paths
Understand normal, magic, rare, and unique item rarity in Path of Exile 1 and how Transmutation, Alchemy, Regal, and Chance currencies move between those states.
Rarity describes an item's modifier structure, not a quality score.
Normal, magic, rare, and unique are different item states. Moving upward in rarity changes what kind of modifier result the item can carry, but a rarer label does not automatically make the item useful. The underlying base, modifier combination, values, and character needs still decide whether the result matters.
Different currencies take different routes from the same base.
Orb of Transmutation moves a normal item to magic. Orb of Alchemy moves a normal item directly to rare. Regal Orb starts from magic, retains its current modifiers, adds one, and makes the item rare. Orb of Chance starts from normal and chooses a random rarity. These routes are not interchangeable because they preserve and randomize different parts of the item.
Choose the path based on what is already worth keeping.
Use a direct normal-to-rare route when the starting item has no modifier result to preserve. Use the magic-to-rare Regal route when the magic roll itself is the reason to continue. Treat Chance as a separate rarity gamble rather than a dependable upgrade step. At every stage, stop when the current result no longer justifies more currency.
Do not assume rare always beats magic or that unique always beats rare. Rarity alone does not measure compatibility, modifier strength, or market value. PoE2 uses materially different Alchemy and Chance outcomes, so its upgrade advice must remain separate.
