Unique or destroyed. There is no safe middle result.
A Path of Exile 2 Orb of Chance is a binary gamble on a normal item. The source description says the item is either upgraded to unique rarity or destroyed. Unlike an ordinary rarity upgrade, failure does not leave behind a magic or rare version of the base.
Treat the normal base as part of the cost.
Use only a normal base you are prepared to lose. The possible unique outcome depends on the selected base, while the failed outcome removes that item entirely. The imported record begins at drop level 12 and stacks to 10, reinforcing that each attempt consumes both the orb and a candidate base.
A failed use destroys the item. There is no magic or rare fallback described by the PoE2 record. Do not follow PoE1 advice here: that version upgrades a normal item to a random rarity rather than using this explicit unique-or-destroyed outcome.
Price the failed attempts into the decision.
The market cost is not only the Orb of Chance exchange value. Suitable normal bases, their availability, and the likelihood of repeated destroyed attempts all affect the practical expense.
