Item Rarity and Upgrade Paths
Understand Path of Exile 2 item rarity and the distinct upgrade paths created by Transmutation, Alchemy, Regal, and Chance currencies.
Each rarity step changes how the next modifier decision works.
A normal item is the unmodified starting base. Magic and rare items carry random modifier results, while unique items have their own defined identities. The rarity label describes the item's state and crafting possibilities; it does not promise that the item fits a build or has strong values.
PoE2 separates incremental upgrades from replacement rolls.
Orb of Transmutation creates a one-modifier magic item. Regal Orb preserves a magic item's current modifiers and adds one while upgrading it to rare. Orb of Alchemy instead accepts normal or magic items, discards any current magic modifiers, and creates a four-modifier rare. Orb of Chance is outside that steady path: the normal base becomes unique or is destroyed.
Decide whether to preserve, replace, or risk the starting item.
Transmutation and Regal support an incremental path when the current modifier deserves to survive. Alchemy is a replacement route to a fresh four-modifier rare. Chance is a destructive unique gamble. Choosing correctly begins with a simple question: is anything on the current item worth preserving?
Do not use Alchemy on a magic item expecting its modifiers to remain, and do not use Chance expecting a magic or rare fallback. A higher rarity can still produce an unusable item, so evaluate the actual modifiers after every step.
