Orb of Alchemy
Understand how an Orb of Alchemy creates a four-modifier rare item in Path of Exile 2, why normal and magic starting items behave the same at the finish, and what gets discarded.
What happens if you use it?
A normal item becomes rare with four random modifiers.
The base item's identity remains.
The base is worth turning directly into a four-modifier rare.
The four modifiers may not work together or suit your build.

Create a four-modifier rare and replace the old roll.
A Path of Exile 2 Orb of Alchemy upgrades a normal or magic item to rare with four random modifiers. If the starting item is magic, its current modifiers are not preserved. The result is a new four-modifier rare based on the same underlying item, not an extension of the magic item's existing properties.
Pick the right base, not a magic roll you hope to keep.
Use the orb when the underlying base is desirable and a fresh four-modifier rare is worth generating. A magic item can be eligible, but its present modifiers provide no protection or head start because the directions explicitly say they are not retained. Judge the resulting rare as a new roll.
All four resulting modifiers are random. Do not spend the orb to preserve a good magic modifier—the source record says current modifiers are discarded. The PoE1 version only targets normal items and does not use this exact four-modifier description.
Measure the cost of attempts, not a promised outcome.
Its practical value comes from producing rare candidates during progression and crafting. Exchange value still changes with league supply, demand, and how often players are willing to repeat the random upgrade, so current source time and volume matter when estimating the cost of multiple attempts.
