Rare Item Modifiers
Understand how rare-item modifiers occupy limited space in Path of Exile 2 before adding, removing, or replacing one with crafting currency.
A rare item is a base plus a limited set of added properties.
The base item establishes the starting identity. Random modifiers then supply the extra properties that determine whether the finished rare supports a character, fills a missing need, or creates a poor combination. Preserving the useful part matters because several Path of Exile 2 currencies change only part of that modifier set.
Prefix and suffix space controls what can happen next.
Modifiers belong to prefix or suffix groups and the rare item has limited capacity. The imported Exalted Orb instructions state that rare items can carry up to six random modifiers. A displayed line is not always a safe substitute for the underlying modifier count, so an item that appears visually short can still require closer inspection before another modifier can be added.
Incremental crafting makes the existing modifier set the starting point.
The Path of Exile 2 Chaos Orb removes one random modifier and adds another, so most of the rare item remains. The Exalted Orb keeps the current modifiers and adds one random modifier when space exists. Before either decision, identify what you hope to preserve, what you can afford to lose, and whether the item has room for the attempted addition.
Neither currency lets you choose the exact random result. Do not assume an open-looking item has usable modifier space, and do not apply Path of Exile 1 Chaos Orb advice here: that game's version rerolls the rare item's full random modifier result.
