Sockets and Support Gems
Understand Path of Exile 2 Skill Gem support sockets and why Chromatic and tiered Jeweller currencies do different jobs from their PoE1 namesakes.
Support sockets belong to Skill Gems, not the old equipment-link system.
Path of Exile 2 structures support capacity around Skill Gems. A Skill Gem's support sockets determine how many Support Gems can be attached, while socket colour affects which support can occupy a socket. This is materially different from managing linked sockets on PoE1 equipment.
Tiered Jeweller currencies set support capacity; Chromatic changes a colour.
The imported Lesser, Greater, and Perfect Jeweller records set a Skill Gem to three, four, and five Support Gem sockets respectively, only when it currently has fewer. The PoE2 Chromatic Orb changes the colour of a socket on a Skill Gem rather than reforging an equipment item's full socket-colour arrangement.
Choose the Skill Gem's support plan before expanding or recolouring it.
Identify the main Skill Gem, the Support Gems intended for it, their colour requirements, and the current support-socket count. Use the appropriate Jeweller tier for capacity and Chromatic only for the specific colour problem. More capacity has no benefit without useful supports to fill it.
Do not copy PoE1 advice about equipment sockets, links, or a generic Jeweller's Orb. The games share familiar currency vocabulary while targeting different objects and using different progression rules.
