Orb of Transmutation
Understand how an Orb of Transmutation upgrades a normal item to magic in Path of Exile 1 and why the selected base still determines whether the result is worth developing.
What happens if you use it?
A normal item becomes magic with random modifiers.
The base type and its built-in identity remain.
You want a low-cost first roll on a useful normal base.
The initial magic modifiers may be irrelevant or weak.

The first step from a plain base to a modified item.
A Path of Exile 1 Orb of Transmutation upgrades a normal item to magic. The base identity remains, while the item gains a magic modifier result. It is a lower-commitment rarity upgrade than jumping directly from normal to rare.
Use it to begin evaluating a promising base.
Choose a normal base whose underlying type is useful, then evaluate the magic result rather than assuming the upgrade itself created value. A good magic starting point can later matter for other crafting steps, while a poor result may not deserve additional currency.
Magic rarity does not guarantee useful modifiers. The PoE1 source record does not specify the exact number added in its short description, so do not import PoE2's explicit one-modifier wording into this guide.
Low-tier utility still depends on repetition.
A single orb may be inexpensive, but repeated attempts across many bases create a real total cost. League supply and demand still affect exchange value, so PoExplorer keeps the permanent function separate from current market observations.
