Turn a plain base into a new rare item.
A Path of Exile 1 Orb of Alchemy upgrades a normal item to rare. The normal base supplies the item's underlying type and requirements; the resulting rare gains a random modifier result. The orb changes rarity, but it does not let you choose the properties that appear.
Choose the base before gambling on the rare result.
Because the source directions target a normal item, the useful decision begins before the orb is spent. Start with a base whose item type and underlying characteristics fit the goal. The resulting rare may be worth evaluating, rerolling, or discarding depending on the random modifiers it receives.
The rare result is random and can be unusable even when the base was well chosen. The orb only applies to a normal item in the imported PoE1 directions. Path of Exile 2 also accepts magic items and explicitly replaces their current modifiers, so its advice should not be copied here.
Common crafting utility still has a changing cost.
Orb of Alchemy demand can come from many ordinary item-upgrade decisions, while its exchange value still moves with league supply and player activity. Use current market context when comparing the cost of repeated attempts rather than treating one remembered ratio as permanent.
