A Path of Exile 1 Vaal Orb corrupts an item and may modify it unpredictably. The source directions state that corrupted items cannot be modified again. The important decision is therefore not only what might change, but whether the current item is ready to leave ordinary crafting behind.
Finish every ordinary decision before accepting corruption.
Treat the orb as a final-stage gamble on an item whose normal crafting work is complete. Review the current item, its role, and anything you still intended to change before using it. The imported record begins at drop level 12, but availability does not make the action reversible.
Corrupted items cannot be modified again according to the source directions. Do not use the orb while ordinary changes are still planned, and do not interpret an unpredictable modification as a guaranteed improvement.
Possible upside must be weighed against a locked result.
The orb has a current exchange cost, while the larger economic risk is the item being committed to an unpredictable and permanent outcome. Compare the value of the existing item and the lost ability to modify it with the market cost of the orb itself.
