A Path of Exile 1 Chromatic Orb reforges the colours of sockets on a socketed item. The equipment, its modifiers, socket count, and links remain; the colour arrangement is the random layer being replaced.
Work backward from the gems and links the equipment must support.
List the active gem and supports, translate them into required colours, and confirm that the item already has the necessary socket count and links. The source directions say item quality increases the chance of non-white sockets, so target state matters before repeated attempts.
The colour result is random and can replace a usable arrangement with a worse one. The orb does not add sockets or links. PoE2 targets a socket on a Skill Gem, so its advice does not describe this equipment-wide reroll.
Repeated colour attempts create the real cost.
A single Chromatic Orb's exchange value does not describe how many random attempts a demanding colour arrangement may require. Current supply, league demand, and the selected equipment base all matter when estimating practical expense.
